For the many devoted fans of Steve Hamilton (myself included), this new book has been a long time coming, but it was definitely worth the wait!
Nick Mason is a character that if most of us heard of someone like him, we would probably opt not to make him a friend. This is a guy who has made a life of crime for himself, been busted and sent away for 25 years. But then you get to know him, and he is likeable! He makes some choices that get him out of prison twenty years early, but has he really gotten out of prison? It seems more like he exchanged one prison sentence for another. Perhaps a much more dangerous one.
Hamilton uses this first book to set the basis for a brand new series with Nick Mason as his star. Set in Chicago it’s a classic good versus evil story. He leaves you asking yourself how far you would go to regain some sense of freedom, for a chance to see your family again even if from a distance. I was just about 20 pages in when I was already picturing the movie, and the actor I see as portraying Nick Mason. Yes, it is soon to be a major motion picture. I can’t wait to see it come to life. Nor can I wait for the second book in this series. The ending leaves you wondering just what Hamilton has in store for Nick next.
