The Lost for Words Bookshop by Stephanie Butland

First let me just say that I adore the name Loveday Cardew. She is the voice of The Lost for Words Bookshop. Loveday spends her time surrounded by books to avoid facing her past and people. Living life this way has been working for her for several years until a poet- and three mysterious deliveries- arrive on the doorstep of her refuge.

Loveday is one of several delightful and quirky characters that had me captivated from the start. She is a character that is going to stick with me long after I’ve finished reading her story. She is funny and fearful, strong and courageous, stubborn and tenderhearted. The trauma Loveday suffered as a child is handled with a gentleness that I appreciated. Every story doesn’t have to be fraught with violence and darkness in order to feel real.

The Lost for Words Bookshop by Stephanie Butland made me laugh out loud; it made me cry and most of all, I was left wishing that Loveday could be my real friend. This book was easily my second favorite novel in 2018.
