A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

Don’t let the title fool you. While this incredible novel takes place in Russia, it is set entirely in the Grand Hotel Metropol. A Gentleman in Moscow is the story of Count Alexander Rostov who is found guilty by the state of being an aristocrat, a crime for which he is sentenced to house arrest in the famous hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Only 30 years old, this wealthy, well-educated, world traveler will now spend decades roaming the halls of the Metropol.

How does a man find purpose no matter what his life has become? Can one make a family from the people you find around you? The true beauty in this story is reading how the Count strives to remain a gentleman, how he comes to appreciate and even love the people who inhabit the hotel. Like the lives of many men, the Count’s is full of intrigue, love, humor, friendship and food. The size of the world he lives in never defines him. I loved it!
